I don't know, it doesn't matter what it is being called, everyone knows that it is Halloween and Christmas. The whole thing is as you said ridiculous and I believe unnecessary! Just my thoughts...

In recent years Halloween and Christmas have morphed into more secular than religious holidays. However, some religions dont reconize them or forbid celebrating them. There are lots of other religious holidays that are important to Muslins, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus etc that are not celebrated and those children could feel left out. I really dont have a problem with calling them festivals if it will help to improve the acceptance of diversity in the schools. Kids will have fun at attending anything that will get them out of class and are much more accepting of differences. It is usually the parents who tend to question motives. I have followed this practice in my business and my employees seem very comfortable with this, everyone feels included and no one is slighted

Well, 50 years ago, most of the people who lived in the U.S., no matter what their ethnicity, were Christian. The odd men out were the Jews.
Today there are a lot of odd men out. In the big cities, where there are a lot of immigrants, you have Chinese and other Asians who are Buddhists, Middle Easterners who are Islamic, and Indians who are Hindu.
America is a different place than it was 50 years ago.
So, in an urban area where there are a lot of non-Christians, I would say....just don't have a Christmas pageant! You know, like in the Charlie Brown cartoon. You don't have to go renaming the season and the holiday.....but just don't have a Christmas pageant! Don't have anything! Just tell the kids its winter vacation.

I was surprised when they changed the names of 'Halloween party and Christmas party' to "Fall and Winter Festival' but like you said, as long as the children have fun.......... The school system is just trying to remain neutral with all the different religions.

Yeah, I can't help but feel that's trivialising it a bit. Dunno about the Halloween part, though... That's not a religious holiday. Well, I suppose it's Pagan, but nobody's going to know that anyway. I won't even get started about Christmas in fact being a Pagan holiday.
What I really, really want to know is where the hell all the political correctness comes from in the US (and UK, where I am). Most people I know are leftists and they all hate PC, and from what I see on the Internet the right hate it too. Oh well.
