In Europe, the war started, when Germany invaded Poland. In the early morning hours of Sept. 1st 1939, the german government feigned a raid on a broadcast station near the border by "polnish" troups, and declared to "strike back". Therefore, Great Britain and France declared war to Germany, while the Soviet Union remained neutral.

Strictly speaking the war took on a world-wide dimension when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour without a prior declaration of war. Notwithstanding this, the USA took the attack as a de-facto declaration of war, and, as a result, the existing combatants declared war on each other.

Prior to Pearl Harbour, war had been confined to Europe, western Asia and North Africa (although Japan had been attacking the states on the western seaboard of the Sea of Japan).

The war in Europe started as a consequence of the Danzig Corridor crisis. Germany demanded access through Poland to Danzig and Poland resisted. Germany, thinking France and Britian would do nothing (as had happened in the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia) invaded Poland.

Britian told Germany to stop and revert back to the old frontier. Germany ignored Britian, so Britian declared war on Germany. Italy declared war on Britian and France (eventually) declared war on Germany and Italy

WWII officially began with Germany invading Poland (although there were other battles before the invasion).

There is a Russian author who claims that the Soviet Union actually instigated the invasion by spreading propaganda that the Poles had declared war on the USSR.
