Personally, I like subtle stories that reveal a profound truth about the world and human relationships. Historical novels and novels about different places, people, and times. People overcoming their narrow world views is always interesting. This includes science fiction as well.
The exquisite use of language is always the best.

As an avid comics and book reader, I'd say: Fantasy / Science fiction (short or epic). Writers really stretch their imagination, from the laws of science, languages, to the elements of the story. The plot is twice as fascinating since the environment / setting of the story operates on a different plane, most of the time. These genre give us a sense of infinite possibilities in regard with our current technology, cultre, lifestyle and often, morality.

Yesterday it was Regency novels. Found a Georgette Heyer I hadn't read for ages.
Today it's fantasy fiction/mythology. Just bought a new Tom Holt.
Tomorrow it will probably be space opera, cos I also bought a Red Dwarf book.
