Where can i find Detailed understanding of a tanks drive mechanisim?

I had this idea at college the other day and i really want to make it happen.

If you could also send links that'd be awesome, Im an engineering student and want to invent somthing, and if i find what i seek, in a couple of years down the line, you'll start seeing my 100% co2 free vehicle :D

I know that theres somthing about hydraulics in the drive mechanisim, im not 100% sure about it though, im looking for more modern vehicles (1989 +)

Thanks! :D

Try looking for a tank repair manual at this site

You could also try contacting someone that restores old tanks for info on how the tracks/transmission work...usually the power to the tracks is altered in some fashion to allow for turning, either by clutch or hydro-static drive through separate levers. The Abrams tank is somewhat different in that it uses something more like a motorcycle grip to apply power and turn the tank. You may also look into heavy equipment like Caterpillars and other such tracked vehicles for info on how they transfer power to the tracks. Hydro-static drive is probably the most efficient way for very large, heavy vehicles as enormous pressures can be applied with it with little wear for longevity between servicing..
