The songs are still on my computer, however, the actual ipod is empty.

I keep getting a message saying:

itunes cannot read the contents of my ipod'

what should i do?

probably restore it from the itunes menu in ur ipod settings

Is the ipod formatted for a mac?
What I would do is completely reset the ipod as described in the instructions on www.apple.com/uk.
Then it should work.

reset your i pod before checking they are compatible with i-tunes ie they are not protected if you bought them from another internet based music download site. cos mine did that to me and now mine works perfect.
