When you arrive you get a 30 day VISA as a tourist. Have the hotel name/address ready when you get off the plane. If you are coming to work you need a VISA.

Visas are granted, on arrival. Rules, as under:
Since the country is made up of tiny islands, the most common means of transportation to and from the Maldives is by air. The requirements to enter and exit the country are few and simple. You must have a valid passport. Once you arrive at Male’ International Airport, your passport will be stamped, and an immigration official will issue you a free entry visa that allows you to stay up to 30 days. It is recommended that visitors have confirmed hotel/ resort reservations, however, there is a Tourist Information Counter in the arrival hall through which reservations may be made for those who arrive without confirmed accommodations. It is also advised that visitors have a return plane ticket and sufficient funds to stay in the country (US$25 per day of stay). You may ask to extend your stay up to 90 days, and with sufficient funds you may be approved. US$10 (per person) is the exit tax you must pay in cash at the airport when you leave.
* Note that December through March is when most resorts are full, so make reservations in advance if you plan to stay during these months.
* Visitors coming from yellow fever infected areas are required to have an international certificate of inoculation. A tourist visa of 30 days is granted to all visitors with valid travel documents upon arrival.
*The following is prohibited or restricted to bring into the Maldives: narcotics, religious material (personal material such as a Bible is allowed), idols, pornographic material, live pigs, psychotropic substances, arms, ammunition, alcohol, pork products, dogs and dangerous animals. If you must bring a plant or live animal (other than a pig or dog), official sanitary documents are required or they will be confiscated. Also, you must carry doctor’s prescriptions for any medicines you bring.

An Indian passport holder needs no visa to travel to Maldives. But if you are going on a work permit you have to get the necessary clearance from Immigration dept., if your passport shows 'ECR" - short for Emigration Clearance Required. If you are going on a visit to Male', it is advised that you carry a return ticket and sufficient funds for your stay there and hotel booking vouchers if any. There are flights from Bangalore and Trivandrum to Male.
Visit visa is granted on arrival for tourists from India.

i was in the maldives for my honey moon and believe you me it was fantastic.yes we do need a visa and worst part is that you have to meet (atleast i did) the emigration officer and they have to stamp your passport with a seal that you are not going to maledives for employment.i think this is really crazy!!!
anyways on arrival at the maledives airport i was asked very strange questions and given a visa only for 15 days.I would like to add here is that i am an NRI who has worked and stayed all over the globe, and my passport is full of visas and stamps of the places i had worked.
inspite of all this i was made to feel really unwelcome.
i hope this gives you a picture of what to expect
cheers
