Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns is the best I have ever seen. He is best known for his exceptional and record-setting nine-year career as a running back for the NFL Cleveland Browns from 1957 to 1965. He is still considered as a candidate for the best running back of all time. In 2002 he was named by The Sporting News as the greatest professional football player of all time.
A nine-time Pro Bowl choice, Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971,. He is one of the few athletes to be a Hall of Fame member in more than one sport. Brown's football talents at Syracuse got him in the College Football Hall of Fame. Brown is also in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame, giving him a rare triple crown of sorts.
He retired, at age 29, at the top of his game, the proud owner of one championship ring (1964) and 20 NFL records that included rushing yards (12,312), yards per carry (5.2) and rushing touchdowns (106).

Let me first state, the I am a Die-hard Cowboys fan and I am having the time of my life this year...but the best all time American FOOTBALL player...that is another subject.
I have two names that come to mind, one that I have seen play and one that I have only read about.
Both of these players are shining examples of a player who could line up at any position and be the best the NFL has.
If teams had 11 players of equal calibur as these two, they would go undefeated year end and year out...
If you want stats...you will need to look them up...but the two names that come to mind for me are:
Walter Payton and Jim Thorpe
There is a reason that "Sweetness" is also known as "Greatness"
As for Jim Thorpe, he dominated at not only football, but at every sport he played. With his American Indian roots, you can't get a truer American athlete and to this day you will not find a more dominating athlete in any sport.
These are guys that I could watch play over and over on the history films...again I've seen "Greatness" live and he would destroy my teams...but he was something special to watch...nobody comes close to either of these players.

Just because Tom Brady has super bowl rings, that is a team effort and he doesn't do it alone. NO, he isn't the best ever.
Brett Favre is the best ever with breaking records season after season.

Walter Payton. He just had that presence. With more than 13,000 rushing yards.. he was the absolute best running back.. no matter if Emmit Smith broke his record. He was an inspiration to me and a legend to the Bears.
