I'm thinking of going on holiday to Crete with my partner and his three year old son. We've never been to Crete before, but have heard that Georgioupolis is a nice village to stay in.

I'd like to know what people think of Georgioupolis who have been there previously. I know there is a nice beach, but is there much else to do?

I've been there this summer for a few days.
It is typical tourist place: hotels and apartments, main road with tourist shops, restaurants and tavernas everywhere ( better food in the village ), fantastic beach, nice point for a one day excursions ( renting a car is almost a must ) to Rethymno is 15min drive and to Chania half hour, cute small harbor.... very nice and safe for a family with children and people that spend whole day on the beach.Nice huge trees providing shade in hot weather all over the place. Nice walks along the river in the village, boat drives...If you are not looking for wild night life and clubbing - it is a great place for holidays.
I was traveling around as Crete has many places worth visiting and people are extremely friendly.

Well I haven't been there recently but it hasn't changed much in the last twenty years so I doubt there will have been much change in the last two-three years.I'm from Crete btw so I can talk objectively cause I can say without over-exaggerating that I have been almost everywhere around the island.
Look Georgioupolis is a nice, quiet little village, emphasize on the little.Yes there is a nice beach, there are some restaurants, tavernas and cafes and that's about it.To tell you the truth I wouldn't recommend it for a long stay,I would be bored.I would say, stay in something bigger, like Rethymnon or Chania rent a car and go for a day or two to Georgioupolis. Also avoid the big tourist attractions(Chersonissos-Malia) cause frankly those aren't places a child should be in,too much drinking and violence, stay clear.

I agree with vivet.
Personally I would chose Georgioupolis if I was to go to Crete again.
