It really depends on what you want to do with it.

In Canada, German will probably be way more useful for getting a good job as many people already speak French. It will also enable you to read the writings of many of the greatest minds in Literature and Science and work in such nice countries as Austria, Switzerland, Germany (of course). I'd therefore go for German.

On the other hand, German is harder to learn than French, so if you want an easier time go for French.

As an English speaker German is easier to learn as it is in the same family of languages as English - Germanic. However, with a language the best motivator is desire. Where do you want to travel? Who in your family speaks what?

And finally, how are the teachers of each language at your school? Is there one teacher that is better than the other? And does your family have French or German roots? If so, it might be nice to know the language an ancestor spoke.

The above factors led me to choose German as my first for. lang and French as my second. And I have to say, after beginning one language, the second is easier since you know what to look for.

French. Half of the English language is based on French. That's why in the field, it's lettuce but in the bowl it's salad. That's also why it's a fiddle in folk/country/Celtic music but it's a violin in classical/pop music.
