Why should the offense lose possession of the ball when the fumble was never recovered? Would the result have been the same in the NFL?

On a related note, what's the curent rule when the offense loses the ball in its own end zone, whether by fumble or a bad snap to the punter, and it's not recovered? Touchback or safety?

If the ball is out of bounds, no one can recover it. In the end zone, it can only be a TD or a touchback. Since the offense lost possession of the ball, it is sort of considered like a punt.

It would have been the same result in the NFL.

If the offense loses the ball in its own end zone and goes out of bounds, it is considered a safety.

I'm confused as to who is reovering the ball here. Let me make it simple. 1) A player possesses a ball in his opponent's end zone - Always a touchdown. 2) A player posesses a ball in his own end zone at the end of the play - Can be a touchback or safety. - If the opponent put the ball in the end zone - touchback - If the player or his teammate put the ball in the end zone - safety There cannot be a score awarded until the play is over, so there is no way to have two safeties (or two of any type of score) on the same play.

In American football, a touchback is a ruling which is made and signaled by the referee when the ball crosses into or through the end zone not in control of the team which put it into play. A touchback is not a play, but a result of events that may occur during a play.

Offense fumbles the ball out of the opponent's end zone - touchback and change of possession.

Offense fumbles the ball out of its own end zone - safety.

Rules are the same at all levels of football.

Yes, that is the rule in the NFL - I do believe that is the rule in all levels of football. Conversely, it is a safety if you fumble out of your own endzone. As to why the rule is the rule - I can't say...
