Pros :
-- Shortened the war by probably a year.
-- Saved American and Japanese lives. Estimated casualties were 1 million American and 5 million Japanese
( military and civilian ) if America had attacked mainland Japan.
-- Atomic bomb research lead to advancements in taming nuclear power for human use. ( power plants, nuclear submarines etc. )
Cons :
-- Considered inhuman
-- Contaminates land with radiation for years after event.
-- Creates fall-out that can get into Earth's atmosphere.

In regards to WWII, the Americans thought they could suffer at least a million casualties trying to capture Japan, plus of course all the Japanese deaths. The 100,000 or so who died in the bombings was much less loss of human life for both sides had they not been dropped. After the bombings the Japanese surrendered.
The loss of life was not extreme for the war either. The fire bombing of several cities in Germany and Japan are all thought to have resulted in deaths of around 100,000 or greater.

Dropping the bomb in WWII to help bring the end of the War to an end was a logical choice. In the long run not only did the bomb save Allies lives ( just ask any WWII Veteran who was scheduled to invade Japan ) but also the Japanese lives as well. because of the Japanese people willingness to " fight to the death " for the Emperor and their country.

The nuclear bomb is a weapon of incredible power. Giving it in mans hand means to give him a responsibility, he cannot handle forever. Some day, nuclear weapons will be used again, and it is everything but sure, if mankind or even the planet itself will survive that day. Generations lived with this fear, and if it's calmer about it right now, this will change with the rise of some new global power as antagonist to the US.
It would have been better, if it was never invented.
