Everything that ELfaGeek said , and one thing to add that he forgot , keep teenagers ,and kids off the computer , they too are a big factor in getting a virus on your computer..
If you have to have one , I would say Windows Live One Care , I have had F secure , and Norton , both slowed down my system , windows does much better , and is cheaper than most others out there , if you go to Microsofts web site , you can try it free for 90 days to see if you like it ...do not fall for those free samples of certian others like AVG , my cousin messed up my dads system doing that , he was flooded with adware , and junk from doing that crap ....the cheap way out is never the best way out ...pay now or pay later ..

None, and I quote:
"Wanna know how to keep your computer free from viruses, pop-ups, spyware, and other junk? Here’s how to do it without installing a single piece of software:
Tell all the males in your house to quit surfing for porn
Buy CDs and rip the tracks from there
Get a Netflix or Blockbuster account instead of using BitTorrent
Instead of looking for software cracks / serials, look for coupons
Stop operating in Administrator mode
Adhering to these five points (and forcing your family or roommates to do the same) should be enough to cut your risk by 90%, I’m guessing. You could do more to protect yourself, though, if you feel the need to download something:
Download drivers through official (or sanctioned) sources
Avoid unnecessary browser toolbars, plugins, or enhancements - and if you’re not sure if a toolbar is TRULY necessary, don’t install it
Read through every bit of a software installer process to ensure you’re not adding something that you don’t need and/or want - and if you’re not a geek, don’t install ANYTHING without first asking permission
Think twice before clicking on links sent to you by email or IM - especially if they prompt you to log in somewhere or download something else
Surf through OpenDNS servers for automatic Web site typo correction as well as an extra layer of phishing filters
That’s probably worth another 10% as far as protection from spyware / viruses are concerned. If you wanna be super-duper protected, surf the Web with Firefox or move to OS X (sorry, gang) and run Windows apps through Parallels. "

Bit defender as it does not suck up your cpu speed as much as good old norton.
I am not a big fan or norton it is more of a hindrance then a help.
Bitdefender scans all files that enter and leave your pc so no virus can get in without being detected and distroyed and best of all it wont suck your cpu speed as much as norton and you do not need to attend to it as much as norton.
Just install it restart and forget about it and if it find a virus it alerts you and asks you waht you want to do with it.
It also works with p2p and email too.

I have always recommended PC-Cillin from TrendMicro. I have had great success and it does not do more than it should. It will set up a firewall as well as give good protection for viruses and ads. It is light on the system resources, which is diferent from the other two well advertised programs.

Norton because it doesn't give false positives and user friendly. I have used Norton for years without any problems. if you decide to install it make sure you have 1 gig ram as it uses resources a bit.
