Hmm...duos are interesting phenomena, and the answer will depend on what we class as a duo. Were Wildred Bramble and Harry H Corbett a comedy duo? They were both classically trained actors, but they're best known around the world as a great comedy pairing - Steptoe & Son. Do they count? Depends on where you draw the line.

Martin & Lewis are supposed to have been fantastic, but I can't nominate them because I personally haven't seen them together. Morecombe and Wise had a real magic in the chemistry between them and gained big success in a small pond as a result. But, sadly predictable as it might be, I'm going to have to go for Laurel and Hardy. In a time and a medium dominated by either single performers or trios, their superb professional relationship stands out as a stunning example of the art of double-handed comedy that straddles both slapstick, schtick and witty wordplay. As others have noted, you can watch a Laurel and Hardy movie today - as I did only weeks ago - and still be drawn into their world and laugh yourself silly. Two perfectly primed professionals that came together to make a comedic critical mass that's left many enduring marks on the nature of what is recognised as funny.

Morecambe and Wise, just the best ever, and I grew up thinking that they were just the funniest people ever.

I lived in Harpenden where eric Morecambe resided for about 35 years, his widow, Joan, still stays there I think, and I visited the town hall where his portrait is, and nearly fainted as he wasn't smiling in it. But then again it is a portrait and meant to be serious.

Eric and Ernie

He won't sell many ice creams going at that speed.

I am playing all the right notes not necessarily in the right order.

More tea Ern?

Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Especially funny when Cook would deliberately try to get Dudley to crack up (on live TV).
He usually succeeded and the sight of poor Dudley Moore frantically trying to stuff a cheese roll in to his mouth to stop laughing was hilarious while Cook looked on like a vulture waiting to pounce. soo funny.

I loved Pete and Dud together.
I think the one legged Tarzan sketch is still one of the funniest things ever.
I'm really sorry there were times they hated another, but the dynamics made for brilliant comedy.
Both funny in their own right but together they had a magic.

Laurel and Hardy easily.

Still just as funny 80 years after they first teamed up.

I would say it's a close call between Laurel and Hardy or Morecambe & Wise. I can watch their material non stop.
