How on earth do I gain access to the wiring behind the light switch? There are no screws to access like in the UK. It just seems to be stuck in place.

Press on the side of the hole where the wire is
connected to and the wire will pop out.

you will find the switch has an outer cover that needs to be taken off, usually a screwdriver under the edge will suffice to do this. then you will have what looks like an older style switch complete with exposed fixing screws. a simple matter of undoing these. But if you aren't sure about opening up a light switch, should you be messing with the wire behind?

I have no real clue, forgive me, but might the switch/receptacle type be one that has compression/ clip type mechanisms for Pressing into a BOX?

Do switches in Australia come with face plates as part of the entire mechanism, in one solid; perhaps molded piece?

Finally, and with no offense...Do light switches in Australia function in the opposite direction of those created for use in the USA? AND do the toilets flush in the opposite direction; as touted? SMILE.
