A level playing field means there is equal opportunity for everyone. It means that the ones who play on that field, have an equal chance to be chosen, and an equal opportunity to shine.

In a practical sense, a level playing field puts competition on a level of real skills. It is just a natural consequence of a level playing field that the individuals who succeed are the ones who are best at whatever the job is will be. That means that "natural selection" will result in the best players being on the field.

This isn't just for sports. It is for any job. Think about it...If you go to a doctor, do you want a doctor who got into medical school because of his money? or his looks? or his race? Of course not. You want a doctor who got into medical school because of his ability.

The one thing that will most help level the playing field is excellent public school education. Because ultimately, it is your education which will get you in the door, and your personal work ethic that will carry you the rest of the way.

There was a time when racial inequality meant that the playing field had to be forced to be level, especially in the job market, where opportunities were closed.

I would not be naive enough to say that the playing field is 100% level. There are still "glass ceilings" which exist for minorities and women; but this is the glass ceiling will exist less over time, as women and minorities establish a mainstream cultural foothold.

I think it means that the person who says it is ready to go to the losing side of an issue or sports team and "level the field" by adding his or her smarts on the issue, or talents on the sports team... they literally level the field which was heavy on one side at the start.
Picture a balance, a teeter-totter if you will, and there is just one more person needed to make it level... that person is the one who wants to "level the playing field."
