I always wanted to know. I haven't really been big on the torrent scene and I don' know international media and copyrigh laws, but is it legal to download fansubbed videos from sites like Dattebayo?
Please, real legal advice and not a fanboy trying to prove that his anime is worthy of being watched.

Downloading an anime for personal use is not a violation what is prohibited is the downloading for commercial sale.

Technically yes but the only thing that the company that owns the anime could do would be to shut down the people subbing the anime. You wouldn't be sued or anything just the distributors. However if the anime isn't licensed in the U.S. there is a good chance they won't do anything to the subbers. Those companys are usually only worried about their home market that is until a company here gets involved and they might have a problem with it. *also many anime is being subbed by the U.S. companies and can be viewed online through streaming websites. This sort of thing is legal and is like watching any other show online.*

It's a matter of if the anime is alredy being licensed in your country or not, if it isn't it fine. If it's alredy licensed please support the author by buying the real DVD/VCD.
Torrent Anime is realy huge right now and since it took a while translationing the anime, the fans are doing it so other fans can enjoy new anime episodes.

Depending on which country you live in.
In some countries, if there are companies that has licensed the particular anime in that country, then it would be illegal to be sharing (bittorrent) such anime.
In some other countries, downloading such stuff is totally illegal cos they are afterall already licensed or copyrighted in Japan.
