You should try switching between NTSC and PAL on your computer and see if that helps (if your TV can only understand one type of colour it'll fall back to black and white if fed a signal with the other type).

It's probably not your TV set. Check your video card's driver software to make sure the TV output is set for the correct region (NTSC for most of the North and South American nations and Japan; PAL/SECAM for the rest of the world). If that's set correctly, then try a new S-Video cable. If that still doesn't work, either your TV or your laptop has a bad S-Video port.

(A little bit of info on S-Video: This TV connection separates light information, or luminance, and color information, or chrominance, to two separate pairs of wires within the cable. This lead to a better picture than composite video, due to less Moire patterns in diagonal and curved lines. The standard connector also has a key pin, to make sure the connection isn't put in incorrectly.)

I've seen this happen with bad cables before, it seems to be a bit hit or miss with some cables showing in B&W while others do it properly. The best advice is to buy the same make of cable as your friend has if his works okay, then you're guaranteed the cable will work properly. I never did find out why this is the case, but the site I bought mine from mentioned this problem and guaranteed theirs worked okay.

There are 2 different formats for output on S-video composite and RGB or Component. The computer and the TV have to match. It's probably best to make the TV S-Video socket match the computer. The setting will be in your setup menu or it maybe a choice on your AV select button.

Make sure that you have a colour television.
