i agree with all the answers, firstly taxing if the drug sellers were to pay tax for selling weed then they would be ok with drugs being sold, maybe not ecstasy and heroin and cocaine, but weed puff skunk, it would all be open to the public, i bet the police would have there dealers in the police station with a room of there own to sell it from, i know thats what happened with prozzies, they were illegal but they made it legal as long as they paid tax, alcohol is not more dangerous they show these stupid adverts of guys jumping of buildings and pretending to be batman after a few drinks but that is not the case, i could believe that if they were on ecstasy, but not alcohol, it makes you act stupid sometimes even in the most sensible of people, but not that crazy, marijunana is different though you have yourself a spliff sit back chill listen to some reggae, some bob or ub40, and ou just chill go to sleep wake up with a head ache same effects really as drink but they say that weed kills brain cells, but then drink kills liver, kidneys, etc, at the end of the day its excuses, and the more they try to ban drugs, the more people are going to want it in my veiw, its like now they want to take ciggerettes from the shelves because britton are going non smoking soon we will only be able to get are tobacco on the black market, which means going to a dealers, and while we are at are dealers it will be 2 ounces of tobacco for about 20 quid, we will be using a old bible for papers, and cotton bud ends for filters, and while we are picking up are 2 ounces of tobacoo it will be oh and ill have some skunk to oh and maybe a few ecstasy, and i have always said it but i bet the goverment are behind a lot of drugs being sold thats the way they are anything for money, i believe the fbi got sued once for selling all the drugs in the evidence room because they were going bust, ha great just proves its the goverment behind most of it,

It's because it was readily available and attempts to make it illegal made the use and sale of it worse. Crime rose during the prohibition years. This prompted that law to be overturned, not because it was a good choice but because restricting it proved impossible. Marijuana being less lethal or less dangerous is not good criteria to legalize it if we can all agree it is bad for you on some level. Don't think for a second that marijuana use is confined to the lower class and the young. BTW: the upper class's drug of choice is cocaine, which is also illegal, and believe me they put the pot smokers to shame with what they get into!

Greetings. the war on drugs started so that the federal kingdom of the FBI could be justified. since they were supposed to be against alcohol and that was no longer banned. what were these secret police supposed to do? simply get other jobs? never. the government never relinquishes power in anything it once obtains. so the war on the then legal drugs. opium, you could buy landanum at the drug store. Marijuana? common among the then Mexican labor forces who brought it with them. again legal. all the other drugs? samething. government simply decided to make everything illegal and send the FBI to go after it. didn't bother to get a Constitutional ammendment to do so as they did with alcohol prohibition, just made it illegal since they were God and could do as they liked. We have had the war on drugs ever since the repeal of prohibition, spent untold billions of dollars on it and created enormous drug bureaus of secret police. and we have more drugs here now then ever. Just a government money grabbing act is all. it has nothing to do with should or should not marijuana be legal.

Alcohol is legal, if you drink moderately, but if you drink more than the required dose, then its the time it became illegal. Would you believe in some areas, marijuana is used in treating patients, especially those with acute diseases? But then again, you don't abuse using marijuana.

I don't think it's stupid at all. It's just that alchohol is such a big part of our society and culture, to the point of even being included in our religious rituals.
If alchohol were a new drug, that just came along now, it would be banned.
The argument that marijuana is no more harmful than alchohol, and should therefore be legal, is silly.
We already have so many traffic fatalities, days missed off work, reduced productivity, broken homes, avoidable divorces, assaults and injuries attributable to alchohol.
Why would we want to double our trouble?

Alcohol & tobacco can be taxed and regulated, weed cannot. If the govt. can't get their cut, it's illegal. Just like recreational drugs. Crack heads can live all their life smoked out, but some of these mainstreams drugs they always pump up on TV can be much more dangerous and deadly.

I think the question is "Why is alcohol legal?" Instead of legalizing drugs we should be worried about limiting access to the ones we have now. Pot is just as dangerous as alcohol behind the wheel of a car. The reason why Pot is illegal is because it is not as socially accepted among those who are considered respected individuals. Show me 1 respecteable pothead, just 1.

They should ban them both....problem is the rich owners of alcohol can control their regulations to a point because the have the money too....drinking is suppose to be done responsibly but is the leading cause of death in the US....I dont get it ...why do either?...smoking is considered a narcotic for starters and is just as dangerous as alcohol when behind the wheel of a car...has alomost the same side effects...slow reaction time, etc, a little ''pot'' or ''dro'' is equal to the same as 7 budweiser beers....(which results in the normal person falling asleep-minus alcoholics--)
..now who stops after one or two puffs?...

You know, none of that stuff is good for you. NONE OF THAT STUFF IS GOOD FOR YOUR FUTURE CHILDREN!! Did you know that stuff goes into the sperm and is passed on to your children? Did you know that it is more fun to have a clear mind than one that is messed permanently-burned- by drugs and Alcohol? The reason for alcohol not being illegal is because so many "rich" and "government officials" drink (socially?). They would evidently not have fun if they can't have alcohol served. How many people does pot and alcohol kill? How many families are torn apart? How many innocent children suffer because their parent wants to do drugs rather than spend time and money on their family? Why?

Because marijuana has a bad image on it. Just think about it if you tell a person you drink the person would be like "Thats cool" but if you tell a person you do weed they would be turned off or look at you with contempt.
