Most people are delusional in search of happiness, they link it to material things that will make their life easier but i doubt will find them true happiness.
I found true happiness only when I am content with the way i am and with what i have. I am no just saying empty words, this actually happened to me in my life, i was always sad for being passed over at work coz i was a woman, and had no "wasta" and people that were assigned to me to train became my superiors after a year or two. One day, the new list of promotions arrived and as usual my name was not there and all my Manager could say was next time ISA. That day after prayer, i just sat there and thought real hard, how will my life change after the promotion? how will I change after it? The answer was nothing, it is just a stupid title that i didn't really need, i loved my job and i would do it just the same. I thought about all the other blessings in my life and i cried..... Only then did i realize i was spending time feeling sorry for myself when i had so much more to feel happy about and at that moment i prayed to Allah swt and begged his forgiveness and never since then did i wish for anything anymore other that "satr and seha" for my whole family and myself.
Guess what, a few month pass and i was promoted but it didn't really make me happy, actually it didn't matter at all.
Sorry for such a long answer but i wanted to share with u how i reached this "content stage".
Happy Eid to u and everybody else, may Allah swt make us all content with what we have before we loose it.

Exactly as you said in the last line of your question, he who SEARCHES for happiness will never ever find it, simply because happiness can be found ONLY within us not anywhere else. As long as you suspend happiness on something to happen, you won't be happy, just BE happy with what you are and what you have just right now, the future is not guaranteed and the past is deed, then you just have the present, or to be more accurate, this very moment not even the next one, LIVE NOW.

Sadly, for far too many, examples from parents, community and society-at-large have taught that material things bring happiness. While most in their 'heart of hearts' know full well true happiness comes from within, they probably also recognize that THIS will probably require much more of them on a personal level than they're willing to give, or undergo. So...most settle for the easier road and hope acquiring many material things will suffice instead.

i ll have to agree with you john ..
coz it takes much more from people to change in thier own selves in order to achieve true happiness. so insted they just set some goal like getting a new car to be their happiness maker unknowingly replacing the true happiness that can be found within the soul not in the car...
Its actually quite sad,
I Wish for every1 to find their lost inner happiness!!

being happy may occurs without actions but from the heart u r living successfully then uj r feeling happy u r with Ur lover then u r feeling happy u r successful in Ur career not a career of work but a career of personality and communication
some people don't even think about Wat I'm talking about so they don't touch the feeling of this happiness

well
i'm not happy because i'm always feeling that Allah is not satisfied by me,and i'm mixed between if they are just wasawes shaytan or nafsy el lawama :(
i always feel that i'm doing bad deeds, even if i'm doing sth good,i find myself asking:am i doing it for Alalh or for myself?
so i'm in pain all the time..i'm out of my mind...
i have a great faith in Allah and his forgiveness but i can;t help myself feeling that i may die and Allah is not happy with me....
