I'm not sure what you're talking about, but I'm assuming you're speaking of pre-Islamic era when girls were buried alive. The reason is simple: it was a custom back in those times to give huge dowry to the groom in order to have your daughter married, so daughters were burdens to the families. I can't say the status of women has changed much ~thinks about honour killings~ but at least today it's the groom who gives the dowry. Of course, instead of liberating women, that new custom which was introduced by Islam has led to a new problem - parents arrange marriages and practically sell their daughter - who bids most wins!

P.S. I am speaking of *some* people of course, it's not my intention to generalise one bit.

I'm guessing one has a penis and the other one has a vagina....? Just joking.I guess I can agree with the other two answers to an exent but they make it sound as though all baby girls were killed and the males were kept.If that were so then the men wouldn't have any women to reproduce with.I've been in Iraq for almost 18 months(longer than any American should be here)and it's to my knowledge that homosexuality between the men isn't looked down upon whatsoever and that the main role for the women is mainly reproduction.I don't know, maybe I'm wrong....But what if I'm not.......?

In the past girls required heavy dowry to get married. And girl child were killed and parents preferred boys only. This was before Islam. After Islam also I do not think much improvement happened in the condition of women in Muslim countries.Women have no freedom and treated as objects for sex.But islam has improved the chances of marriage of young women ,as it has permitted polygamy.Man can have at a time 4 wives. But this has resulted in young girls married to old men, when they cannot afford" new men".
