You're right ! Everybody easily forgets the great love stories. Do you remember one right now? No ? Me neither.
It is human nature to remember what stories wrench their hearts, tug on their tear ducts, makes them hold their breaths and whimper in sympathetic distress.
Yeah, we are all saps !

I'd say one of the greatest love stories in history was of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor-a man who was willing to give up his throne as King of England and let his sister, Elizabeth, become Queen because he had fallen in love with a divorced American woman. Many people of the living older generations (70
s-80's+) remember the man "who gave up his throne for the woman I love."

The only tragedy in their lives was his giving up the throne, because they were happy for years, and he did not see it as a tragedy compared to his marriage.

On Broadway, there is the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, because of the wonderful marriage enjoyed by two actors of the early 20th century-Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, who, like Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, also extremely well known in the theater crowd before their deaths within the last 20 years, earned numerous awards. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee, Ron and Nancy Reagan were also very well regarded Hollywood marriages where only death, a tragedy that hits everyone but which took decades ub each of these cases, are other examples although, because of the ego involved in being actors, you're right, more of the unsuccessful marriages and love affairs were remembered.

The Taj Mahal stands as a testament of love.

In the Bible, the story of Ruth and her devotion to her husband is its own Book.

We tend to remember the more dramatic/melodramatic---an ordinary couple does not get remembered...because those are the exceptiosn to the rule...The reason the news writes about the bad kids and not about the good is the good kid is supposed to be the rule, so the next good kid is, for the most part, just like any other--it's the bad kid that is the exception, the really bad kid is the one that stands out all too often.

well, there are succesfull love stories that get famous... but what's common are those love stories that end up in tragedies... after all, not all love stories have a happy ending.... thus, these stories are part of history because they're meant to be shared... they are meant to be a model for all so that these mistakes and pain made by those who ended up sadly.... won't be done by the future generations....after all they show the reality of love.... happiness....pain...Sacrifice............

Tragedy appeals to a person's emotions. People are generally emotional and nothing moves us more than the demise of others. Plus, a successful person will be forgotten as soon as another one truimphs over his/her victories.

Actually, many 'successful' love stories become famous. However, it's hard to do so without losses, because the best drama revolves around loss.
