All cultures throughout the world used this way of story telling- sometimes with long poems- epic- cause it was the only way -since some civilisations not even had their own written language, or even for other that had a written language - greeks, egypt, assyria etc it was not easy or cheap to find the papyros to write it. Oddyseia and Iliada (by Omiros) are stories made into poems so people could remember them more easily .

Being of an African origin i will answer your question from an African view.I learnt about my ancestors from my grandpa who used storytelling and songs to teach us where we came from.
From my perspective oral tradition is important because;1-It is easy to remember 2-It is am intresting way of passing messages 3-It ensures that we are rooted in our culture and we therefore appreciate its values.

``getiro kere manga `
aye vava ominto`
getiro kere manga``
sokore na nyolo baruethe gochia egetiro``
This is just one of the songs i learnt when i was young.(It`s from the Gussi origin in Kenya).
