Why not simplify it and throw them out,whats the use in having them if they are not used in pronouncing a word?

Even though I don't know much about grammar I think that silent letters are present in order to accentuate the sound or letter placed before it. For example, we all know how to pronounce the word like. You don't say' lik-e', but if you remove the e wouldn't it sound like 'lick'?

Categorize letters as man and woman.

Those letters are silent because they are married to other letters. So even if we dont pronounce them they need to be there when written on a paper - Marraige Policy

We "borrowed" lots of those words (read a phone book or a creole or cajun-based article in or from Louisiana)...
