If you don't want to use masking tape, (some don't), you can run a line of ordinary white glue along the edge, wait for it to dry, then you can carry on stitching. There are products on the market that achieve the same effect, but they do what the white glue does.

Consider how the item will be finished. Will the edges actually be used? Earlier answerers favored masking tape. I find that it can discolor the cloth and adjacent areas if the item becomes a UFO (un-finished object).
Me, for a quick edge that will be either trimmed off or hidden in framing, I run a "bead" of Elmer's washable School Glue along the cut edge. I have machine zig-zag'd, but I've found the glue bead to be less bulky when rolling large pieces on a scroll frame. White iron-on seam binding can also be used without fear of discoloration.
A more traditional method is to hem the cloth first, then do the decorative stitching.

You can put an temporary edge on it with plain old masking tape that you use for decorating. Place half the width of the tape sticky side down on the front edge and fold the other half round to the back of the aida - when the project is complete remove the masking tape before mounting and stretching the material or placing in a frame of a card blank etc.,

I always use masking tape that I fold over both sides of the edge, until the piece is done. Crease the tape down the middle and apply to the front and the back at the same time.

I use masking tape too. lol I do remove when done though so I can bind it(mount it on cardboard) to frame it and I need to be able to stitch from the outside edges across the back of the work good and tight.

Fray Check. Available at Michaels or Joanns. It's a small bottle of liquid that you dab onto the edges of your work. Dries clear and I use it for all my projects.
