Recently I saw a study about circumcision rates in this country, and it noted that overall the rate is holding steady, but that it had gone up or down among certain groups. In particular it mentioned that the rate among African-Americans was now equal to the rate among whites, or in some cases a few percentage points higher. For other races, hispanics in particular, the rate was much lower. Could anyone comment on whether circumcision is in fact prevalent or popular in the black community? Any ideas as to why the rate might have risen in recent years?

Wow, I can't believe that more than 60% of male babies get circumcised these days in the US! In australia the rate is a lot lower and I personally couldn't circumcise my son and I don't have 100% proof that my child will be better off without his foreskin so I didn't do it. Why can't babies be left they way they were born? Its there for a reason as is every other part of our body.

All that hygiene crap is just that, crap, and totally overrated. Only circucised men have their children 'done' and its for selfish, aesthetic reasons. I know of no uncircumcised men who have had their children circumcised for other than a genuine medical reason.

Circumcision is such an arcaic awful thing to do these days when we really do know better.

How interesting....in the U.K. it is not a common procedure..in fact a circumcised male is a rare thing...usually only performed because of a defect..apart from the Jewish community....personally I think it is sad that it is more prevelant in the U.S. now...it is an unecassary operation....males are born as they are for good reason and having spoken to circumcised men often they resent the fact that it was done to them.

It is practised by some West African communities in the UK as it is part of the culture. It is done in the UK sometimes by registered GPs as a private service.

I've always heard that if you aren't circumcised that you will have problems when you get older.

I think circumcision is actually child abuse. The decision for circumcision should be left to the guy. Most folks use the rational of hygiene for this cruel decision. I just wish they would get over it.
