This all started with a conversation about people having time on their hands.

Do people just sit and watch the TV, or do they read ?

I reckon I've read about 40+ so far. Goes some way to prove there's not that much on the TV if nothing else I suppose !!

I'm with you - it's got to be about 40+ so far (with a whole shelf full left for the rest of the year). It's down a bit the past couple of years cus I'm spending an awful lot of time studying for professional qualifications. In the past it's been as many as 3-4 a week (I'm a fast reader as well, so I guess that helps). Sigh....

There isn't much we enjoy on TV but my husband and I prefer to sit and read - some people might think it's a bit sad but we're happy! Besides, you can improve your mind/language etc by reading lots of books.

I love to read and would do it more while the rest of my house was watching tv if I had another place to sit and read, but sadly I don't. I'm also not sure how many books I've read so far this year, my reading habits very depending on time and what I'm reading, some books being devoured in mere hours, other taking several days or longer. If I had to estimate it would probably be between 20 and 30, but I could be totally off. I was trying to count up the ones I remembered reading, but it's too late for me to remember most of them. 20-30 seems a good enough estimate.

I reckon that for this year they must have been quiet many. But I believe we must read almost everything in order to be more informed and so we can formulate a fair opinion about the world. I believe that the books that we must reckon are those that have really offered us something, those that they had a certain quality and have made us a little better people after we have finished them. In fact I believe that there are books that have influenced our life - I speak for those people that they love reading. I believe however, that no book can replace the experiences that life offers us. Regarding the television I believe that we can gain some profit but only if we chose what we watch – in case there is such possibility. About this year I reckon that from the 30 books that I have read those that were worth - mentioned were circa the one third.
Some of them are:
Turgenev – First Love, Petro Calderon – Life is a dream, Poems of Whitman, Elizabeth Browning, Konstantinos Kavafis, Emily Dickinson, Tennessie Williams – Various plays, Reiner Maria Rilke – Poetry, Augustine – Confessions, Plato – Symposium, Kant - The Critique of Pure Reason, Jacques Derrida - The Post-Card: from Socrates to Freud and Beyond, Cyril Collard – Les nuits fauves, Standal - La Chartreuse de Parme, Marguerite Yourcenar - Comme l'eau qui coule, Italo Calvino – Fantastic Stories, Milan Kundera – Life is elsewhere, Boccacio – Decameron, Marcelo d’ Orta – all his books (they are illarious), and many others on history of Art.
In any case reading is like TRAVELING.

I haven't read as many books as I usually do because I'm writing my own book at the moment and I'm not sure if I read these this year or not, but I have liked Nightshade by John Saul, Thirteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult and of course, the Diary of Anne Frank. Nobody said the book had to be fictional.

Not counting what I read for school, far fewer than I care to admit. I don't watch TV either, but I've found myself sitting in front of the computer during those times when I could easily be curling up with a book.

Now that school's started up, I've been reading a lot more since I'm away from my computer between classes.

I really enjoy reading in my spare time, so i reckon I've averaged about 15-20 books this year. I have a bad habit of reading more than 1 book at a time which kind of slows me down. Right now I'm reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and Gallipoli by Les Carlyon.

:)

I read on average 4-5 books a month. I tend not to watch TV as I find it boring, I prefer to read.

I generally read a variety of books, not one subject in particular and sometimes I have a few books on the go at the same time, so depending on what mood I am in, I pick up a relevant book.

At the moment I'm reading Marabou Stork Nightmares by Irvine Welsh, and it has got to be one of my favourite books so far. It is amazing.

Over 60, I didn't count. I love history and fiction, but may read a book on any subject that grabs my interest. I understand that the folks in England put us to shame when it comes to getting through a good read. I go through cycles when I read up to a book a day, then I may not read another book for weeks. I must read the equivalent of a book every two days when I get busy on the net.

I've read over 50 - I'm a reading demon - and my favourite this year so far has been the Wind Up Bird Chronicles by Hanuki Marukami.

I found out about it on http://www.booktribes.com - which I also admit to being involved with. However it does you give you some great books to read and let's you join in with loads of other book lovers - and it's all free!
