Marriage isn't the problem. The problem is the people taking it so lightly.

People marry because they realize that life is long and you want to be retired with a family and grandkids and someone who understands and loves you sharing your life.
For whatever reason, people don't want to get old without someone by their side; they don't want to still be dating and going to bars to meet people when they are in their seventies. They don't want to be sleeping alone when they are in their seventies. By the time they are in their thirties, if they haven't married yet, they're pretty tired of the bar scene and the constant attempt to court or be courted. They know that all around them, people are building families and homes together. They feel the pressure to do that themselves.
Already, in their thirties, they are dating divorced people and dealing with stepkids and stepfamilies and issues from the previous marriage.
But they continue to want to marry again anyway. Because they want their own families.
