I was already in the service, a sergeant E-5 my cousin was in high school with three months to go, his friend had two months to go, they both got deferments to go the day they graduated, what a graduation present, huh?
I met them and, two other cousins in Hanoi about five months later. I then went to the highland of the Hmong and spent eight months there with the Rangers blowing up bridges and mostly harassing the Cong, training the Hmong from spears to rifles. Getting shot at, that sort of thing.
During WW2 they were drafting 25 to 30 then they went to 35 and all the way up to 45 years old. By the end of the war they were asking people with special interests IE: cooks, bakers people they didn't have to train up to 55 years old and even asked prisoners in jails without serious crimes to enlist.
My father-in-law was a heavy equipment operator and, enlisted with his real age and, was asked to go into the engineers, he was 62 years old, he was very proud, with three sons already serving. He was sent to Portugal building an Airbase there, then he was one of the first to start the Alcan highway. I have all his pictures and records of the Alaska highway.

Notices were sent to all men who were 18 -35.
The men were required to report to their local draft board.
The draft board determined if they were eligible for an exemption.
Exemptions were granted for various reasons. For example if the man was physically or psychologically unable to perform the duties that the army would require. Men who were in college, and maintaining required number of units and GPA could be exempted.
Also men who were verified members of various political parties such as the Communist Party were exempt.

Late in the war, there was a draft lottery. Numbers were assigned randomly to potential draftees. (Mine was 319).
