I have a hard time sleeping at night and I have thought about getting something over the counter to help me sleep, but I am afraid that if I take them I will be too groggy in the morning to get my girls ready for school, any suggestions on a kind that will help me sleep but won't leave me groggy?

Valerian root is an excellent natural herb that will help you get to sleep and not feel groggy the next morning. It comes in capsules and are taken 2 at bedtime. They do have a pungent odor, but that won't harm you in any way. You can buy Valerian root in any drug store, grocery store or at Walmart too. They are not expensive and really do work well. I hope this helps you get some sleep soon.

There's plenty you can do. Don't take any alcohol within 2 hours of going to bed - alcohol may make you sleepy but it seriously disrupts deep sleep and is terrible for your health. Make sure the room is completely dark - if you sleep in the daytime put aluminum foil over the windows in your bedroom. White noise will help, like the soft sound of an electric fan (careful, this can be addictive). Take a hot shower just before sleep and a shower-head with a massage setting will help. Try drinking warm milk and eat turkey - both are loaded with a natural sleep aid. Regulate your breathing to long, slow, deep breaths for several minutes. If you need more help there are books that deal with the subject. Good luck.

I don't know about Valerian root, it can cause some people anxiety -- I don't recommend it at all --- Melatonin seems to work pretty well for most people. It's the natural hormone that makes you feel like it's time for bed. There are different doses. One is 3 mg and I've seen another that is 1.5 immediately and then 1.5 time released all in one pill. I've also seen higher doses up to 10 mg which is what some people might need. It's safe as far as I know.

Try taking Tylenol PM and then if that doesn't work get an over the counter one. Just make sure that you take it 8 hours or more before you have to wake up. I take 'em sometimes and as long as you don't take 'em too late at night you'll be fine in the morning.

If you get 8hrs. sleep there is no harm in taking unisome or the store brand that will save you more than 3 bucks, good luck, there's nothing worse than not being able to sleep.
Have you tried a bubble bath and a book, that may work. God bless.

I wouldnt recommend Melatonin. I take 12mgs before bed and thats not strong enough to keep me asleep.
I will say that it will make you fall asleep quickly, but it may not keep you in REM sleep (the most restfull stage).
Im looking for a natural sleep aid too.. thats better than Melatonin

Valerian which is an herb can help (of course, check with doctor/pharmacist for any drug interactions). FYI it stinks and it tastes horrible. Tinctures are best (it's more potent and the odor doesn't go beyond the closed bottle like the capsules).
