It really depends on What kind of car... maybe a large SUV may make you feel more powerful and less likely to get squashed by other vehicles...
Me personally, I like small cars. ( I drive a VW Jetta) I feel it is really easy to park, and I take up less space on the road.. To me this makes me comfortable.
The best advice I can offer to make you feel comfortable is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! You can practice in a range with someone. Don't rush- take as much time as you need and eventually you will be comfortable no matter what you are driving.
You still have many many many driving years left.. so don't get down on yourself. Good luck!

A light weight, small, easy to handle car is best to learn in (a Honda Civic, Jazz, or Mazda 3 are perfect). And although you will only have a limited licence, an automatic is far easier to manage than a manual gear box. A patient and reputable driving instructor also helps.
Anything new is scary but don't be afraid. Once you've had a few lessons you'll wonder what you were worrying about. Good luck.

I am 21 years old and i dont have my license either because of fear also and i need to learn how to drive but personally i think you should get a nice sized car like a chevy Impala or ford taurus to start off with to feel comfortable and then move your way up. My fiance says to learn how to drive a heavy duty truck in the winter time is the best because that means you can drive anything at anytime but I disagree for the fact of FEAR.

Hi J-doll; I know it might sound strange but you need some one that deals with phobias. You need to Know & Beleve that you're not the only out there with that fear. People that help people with fears can work woth you, it will take time, and get you through the driving test, on the road too. By the time they finish helping you you'll be a Good Driver. Check with a "Woman's Health Center" if there is one in your area.

go around and check out cars at a car lot and see what you feel more comfortable in. for me i felt most comfortable in a 85 monte carlo, personally i go for the older vehicals that are heavy and solid. i drive a 94 ford explorer and that for me is a very comfortable vehical because you sit higher and have a good view of everything around you. if you live in a state that you have more snow than sun you might want a 4x4 but thats all up to you... hope this helps

driving may seem daunting at first.but the more experience you get the easier it will become.you are right to try to get a vehicle that you feel comfortable with.some cars are easier to drive than others.its very important to be familuar with all the controls and their functions.other distractions like passengers can affect peoples driving abillity.my own choice of transport is a van i like the visual aspect.where in a car you can only see as far as the vehicle in front.my advice for you would be to try and drive as many different types until you come across one you like.

I'm sort of in the same situation. I'm only twenty-one, but I too am terribly afraid to drive. I think maybe something nice and small. perhaps a ford focus? maybe chevy malibu? something small. least, if I ever drive and get a car of my own, I don't want something so grand. I wonder if the smart cars will ever catch on in the states? hmmm...

First off I envy you. I have been scared to drive my entire life (Im 36 years old) and I have driven only 10 times.
Good luck. I would try for a Corsica or Capri something small that would make easier.

a minivan. what!? no really. they drive like cars, sit up high with alota windows = excellent visibility, lotsa room, low insurance & good enough on gas. you can get a good used one with under 75k miles for $2500. if its your 1st car you're gonna hit stuff, just a fact of life, accept that. about that, you want something with some crunch room around you. small cars dont protect you. master the art of parking & dont drive scared, that causes accidents.
