well first off you need to learn to spell. its government. and i smoked marijuana for well over 20 years. i agree it is far less damaging than alcohol. i am an alcoholic and it is very disgusting for me to live day by day relying on the bottle. it is a horrible way to live. and you are correct about harder drugs. cocaine can lead to a very quick heart attack, ive been there. as far as meth or crack i have never tried any of that junk. and i hope you never try that junk also. i truly dont understand the whole reason of marijuana being illegal. marijuana is far safer than alcohol. just my opinion. if you are a weed smoker then just do what you like. but in todays society where you get drug tested for almost any job it is not easy to smoke weed and try to get a job. but society still accepts alcohol use. sure it is not fair. i would much rather come home and smoke a nice fat joint than drink. good luck to you.

Reasons/Excuses that I can think of off the top of my head:

There's more money in an item when it is a Black Market item

It gives law enforcement a 'handle' on anyone they want to bust but don't have anything else to hang on them; i.e., if a 'perp' is relatively 'clean', one can always plant a joint or baggie with something stronger in it on them. It is the person's word against that of a law enforcement agent, who one supposes to be beyond reproach.

No laws controlling quality, weights & measures, or pricing

No licenses for dealers, no taxes, ability to keep the competition down by rounding up and busting any 'unauthorised' dealers.

No customer complaints (what, you're going to call a cop if you don't like the deal?)

The ability to 'confiscate' private property (houses, vehicles, yachts, planes, etc) by simply 'finding' sufficient quantities of illegal substances 'on the premisis' to claim 'they were dealing'. Once the 'perps' are locked away. Then the 'confiscated' items go on the auction block to buy the 'boys in blue' more exotic 'toys' they can use to set up the next poor fool who thinks he lives in a free country.

Drug companies do not want a nonpatentable, naturally growing, easy to grow, plant that can ease pain, reduce nausea, and has many other medicinal uses, and can easily be grown at home for next to nothing... the drug companies don't want this sort of substance available, competing with their expensive, prescription drugs.

Alcohol, we already tried controlling that by a total ban. It didn't work then, and total prohibition doesn't work now. (unless you consider the possibility that the 'conspiracy theory delineated herein, isn't just a theory; in which case one might be able to say that it worked perfectly then, and is working perfectly now...).

Tobacco, a perrenial favorite; insidiously addictive and legal. And, just look at all the business it drums up for the medical industry and cancer research industry.

If we stop tobacco, and cure cancer, or eliminate its main source; then what are we going to do with all the research dollars that have gone into cancer research, treatment plans, surgeries, radiation treatment centers, and so on? The cure for cancer would destroy the whole infrastructure built up around cancer. It would destroy carreers. It would eliminate a very large portion of university research grants.

I'm sure there are more reasons that can be found; but I think the above pretty well covers the main possibilities.

Dennis Miller disclaimer: "Of course, this is just my opinion; I could be wrong."

The government doesn't need a reason as it both makes and enforces the laws. There is no reason for it being illegal other then some people think that if they don't like it, then nobody should be allowed to do it. It is basically the same argument used in the alcohol prohibition that says "I know what is best for you - what you want doesn't matter".

Well the theory is that government would trouble regulating the industry as people grow it already. Also not large companies would be able to gain control of the market. Technically weed is only on Prohibition just like alcohol was in the 20's. So until social attitude change around from around the drug it looks like it's going to be illegal.

Governments are mostly run by stuck up elitists hence they don't understand the pleasure commoners get from weed. All they care about is their popularity with voters and supporting weed legalization could ruin popularity.

(On a side note, weed isn't as harmful as some people would want to portray it. Also, coffee drinking and cigarette smoking are actually more addicting than smoking weed)

sure but it has THC a hallucinogen. and way back when even alcohol was illegal. weed has always been illegal and alcohol started out as legal. as for the others I do not know. I think any drug has the potential to destroy. tobacco and alcohol are right up there on my list and yes I do both in moderation. there are just too many lives being ruined and it is not always the user.

So they can make money, Control ! Greed! If it were legal they would loose jobs, money and they would have to admit they were wrong , It is very useful medically, enviromentally, recreational and it gives giggles, the best thing 4 any living thing.

Sheer inertia I think.

Making it legal now would be tantamount to admitting it was stupid to waste money and persecute users for seventy years before, trying to prohibit it.

It's not unusual for people to go on screwing themselves rather than risk the possibility of having to admit they were wrong.

the reasons have changed over the years. today the enforcement industry is just too big. thousands of high paying jobs would be lost.

of course the liquor industry is frightened about lost revenue.

so why not make alcohol illegal rather than marijuana legal? coke is already illegal, so moot point.Even though alcohol is legal, there are places you cannot consume it, and many places you cannot work having consumed it, pot is no different. Even if weed were legal, your employer could terminate you for using it... we would end up with even more unemployed pot heads on the government dole....
