I wanted a clean slate on my computer, so I decided to format my laptop; a Dell Inspiron 6000.

I completely deleted all partitions, and then created one in the empty partition space (so Symantec backup is inaccessible). However, I am not sure which drivers to install to make my computer internet-accessible (ethernet controllers), nor do I know what sound card drivers and graphics/video/display drivers to download so that my computer will function as it was before.

I have a Dell Dimension ResourceCD [contents: Device drivers, Diagnostics and utilities, Computer documentation].
My format CD was a Windows XP Home Edition that came with my desktop computer (a 2400), which is what I used to format my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

After a fresh OS installation, install the chipset driver and the device drivers. Do not use the driver of another dell model, chipsets and devices may be different. If you do not have the driver CD, download it from dell.

The Dell Resource CD should have all the drivers for your ethernet, sound, modem, video. It will give you probably 2 or 3 different sound cards. I would just install all. I think with dell if you try to install a device that you don't have, it doesn't continue.

Dell Recovery CDs are hardware specific, by model number. You can't use a CD from one PC to Restore another PC ever. PERIOD.

You've probably trashed your laptop. Call Dell tech support, they may be able to help.
