Adding integers of
*the same signs...--> just add the numbers, take the sign...
ex. 4 + 5
4 plus 5 is 9, and 4 and 5 are both positive, hence, 4 + 5 is positive 9
ex. -4 + -5
4 plus 5 is 9, and -4 and -5 are both negative, hence, -4 + -5 is negative 9

*opposite signs...--> subtract the two numbers, take the sign of the bigger number.
ex. -4 + 5
5 minus 4 is 1. since 5 is the larger number, and it is positive, we take its sign..-4 + 5 is positive 1 or -4 + 5 = 1
ex. 4 + -5
5 minus 4 is 1. since 5 is the larger number, and it is negative, we take its sign..-4 + 5 is negative 1 or -4 + 5 = -1

Subtracting integers..
change the sign of the subtrahend and proceed to addition of integers as i discussed in details...

ex. 4 - 5

in this example, 4 and 5 are both positive..4 is the minuend, 5 is the subtrahend...

changing the sign of the subtrahend, and changing the operation to addition, we have...
4 + -5 (note that 5 now is negative)
you will now ADD two integers of opposite signs...
so 4 - 5 = -1

ex. -4 - 5
you are subtracting -4 and 5. changing the sign of 5 and proceeding to addition...
-4 + -5 = -9
you are now adding two integers of the same signs
so -4 - 5 = -9

Subtraction is one of the four basic arithmetic operations; it is the inverse of addition. Subtraction is denoted by a minus sign in infix notation.

The traditional names for the parts of the formula

c − b = a

are minuend (c) − subtrahend (b) = difference (a). The words "minuend" and "subtrahend" are uncommon in modern usage. However, "difference" is very common.

Subtraction is used to model several closely related processes:

1. From a given collection, take away (subtract) a given number of objects.
2. Combine a given measurement with an opposite measurement, such as a movement right followed by a movement left, or a deposit and a withdrawal.
3. Compare two objects to find their difference. For example, the difference between $800 and $600 is $800 − $600 = $200.

In mathematics, it is often useful to view or even define subtraction as a kind of addition, the addition of the opposite. We can view 7 − 3 = 4 as the sum of two terms: seven and negative three. This perspective allows us to apply to subtraction all of the familiar rules and nomenclature of addition. Subtraction is not associative or commutative— in fact, it is anticommutative— but addition of signed numbers is both.

Integers are whole numbers. Therefore they may be considered individuals. Therefore we can say that if the party of the first part is a more substantial individual than the party of the second part, then theoretically the values of the parties may be counted down simultaneously until the party of the second part's value is nil, at which point the value of the party of the first part is the valid result. On the other hand, if the party of the second part is more substantial, thus raising the expectation of a negative result, one carries out the measured reduction until the party of the second part decrements to nil, whence the value of the first part, now negative is the result. If the two parties are of equal value, the result is nil.

three minus two equals one.

the difference between three and two is one.

I am not sure which you need but the first is straight forward.
