My gf was telling me that leaving items pluged into the usb would end up killing my computer faster, so i was wondering would leaving in a usb hub actually have any effect on this?

Leaving USB items plugged in all the time has no effect whatsoever on the performance of your computer. I would worry more about spyware and overheating. Those kill computers, not USB.

as long as the USB item plugged to the PC there is no harm to your PC and nothing will happen
what is really important is the way you unplug the USB item.
you must click the green arrow that is found in the task bar to smoothly remove the item, otherwise that my affect the mother board of your system if you just pull it.
so your GF has some idea.

Um... No. Your gf is wrong. Unless having a mouse plugged in is going to kill your computer? Not likely.
