Well, white elephant story is a folk tale from Thailand so there's no such thing as a real white elephant.
If I remember the story correctly, it was the Thai king that wanted a white elephant and 2 versions of it were born.
1st version: The thai king spend a lot of money looking for it.
2nd version: The thai king had a white elephant and spend a lot of money looking after it.
That's y white elephant is call big, expensive and useless thing.

White elephants are found in the forests of Thailand and Cambodia. It is believed that white elephant is an incarnation of Bodhisattva. They are very rare and worshiped by Buddhist Monks.
