I've had very few occasions to have to deal with a rude professional person. However, when necessary, I believe in speaking up. You may not be a doctor or an architect or an engineer, but it does not mean that you are stupid, or undeserving of courtesy. If you are paying for the services of such a person, speak up and tell them what you think, and how you expect to be treated. If it happens a second time, find another professional to do what you need.

The few times I have encountered it, I call them on it.
Once a doctor was chewing out the receptionist while I was in the waiting room apparently believing that appointments made with him were being transferred to other doctors. I simply spoke up and said (roughly) "Doctor, this behavior is unacceptable and is certainly unacceptable in front of patients." He backed down and left and the woman thanked me.
When I went to see a doctor for the first time and arrived 15 minutes early for a 1pm appointment to do paper work, nobody was in the office and it was locked. A person arrived at about 1:10 saying they had a party of some kind at the lunch hour and apologized. I was put in an examination room and left. I was the only patient. At 1:40, having seen no one, I put my clothes on, gathered my records from the pocket on the door, walked out without a word and found another doctor.

It would depend on the actions or reply to the conversation. If they are unprofessional, point it out and let them know it offends you. Ask to speak to their supervisor if need be and place a complaint.
If they are having a bad day, tell them to leave it at the door when they come in to work, ....you did not cause it. Thank them for their time and bid them a fond farewell.
People who are not professional and have no training on how to handle such situations as being offensive to customers do not have any business in playing the roll of being called a professional. They need to be slinging hamburgers in the back of Mickey D's! Manners never killed anyone!

Rudely. I had a doctors appointment once and when I waited for over an hour and a half past my appointed time I complained. I was told the doctor had an emergency and I would have to wait but it shouldn't be much longer. I told the girl (politely but with attitude) that when I called for the appointment I was told he was booked for over a month and would have to wait and I did. I was also called ahead of time with a reminder and admonished I would be billed if I were to miss the appointment and I didn't. Then I told her my time was every bit as valuable as the Doctors and HE missed the appointment and I would be billing him emergency or not. I left the office and sent a bill too.The doctor called to personally apologize and saw me the first thing the next day and I have never had another appointment with him that I wasn't seen promptly.

Turn the other cheek, they may be having a bad day.
Do you ever have a bad day, and are rude, or short with someone.
Nobody is perfect, nobody, allow all people to make errors and mistakes.
People are generally self-regulating,
we should not want to judge others.
Keep peace in your heart, forgive and forget.
You will be much happier if you can.

"rude professional?" sounds like the biggest paradox to me...
never return their rudeness, because that's just going turn you into one of them.
I always seek and try to understand people who are rude, but there's a thin line between understanding them and allowing them to violate you as a person.

There's not much you can do. you just have to keep being professional, eventually someone will realise that this person is no good, and they will get fired.
Just do a better job than them. Simple.

My method for handeling rude people is to be even more polite than you started out. I have noticed that the more polite you are to the rude person they will eventually lose their freakin minds and shortly aftre, loseing their jobs.

You just tune them out or lose your job! I know, I was fired for being to out spoken and not being a kiss as#. So, just suck it up. What comes around goes around. My ex boss is now fat and miserable. She had a baby a couple of years ago and never lose the weight. That was her bad karma. She used to be very good looking and competitive. Vein and upper class. I know it's killing her. She probably never experienced anything like it in her life!
