I found 2 sites for your area that can help you find the assistance or housing/care for your mom; chicagolandcaregivers.com and www.Aging-Parents-and-Elder-Care.com . They would have professionals who could assist you.
The Chicago Care Givers site also has a support group listing for caregivers. Veteran caregivers have lives it and might even have better suggestions.

I am not sure if this will help you or not, I hope so! I am in Pennsylvania and also a nurse, I worked in a long term rehabilitation facility for a few years. from what I learned, there are skilled services that your mom might be in titled to. medicare covers these skilled services for rehab. your mom had surgery and in need for rehab, that is the skilled services I am talking about, under medicare in Pennsylvania they pay up to 120 days. medicare is government, so it should be the same in ill. medicare should be covering her stay there as well the medications that she is on more importantly the therapy that she is receiving. if the place is an up standing facility they should have a social worker there to help you and guide you in the right direction. also check if the facility is a profit or non profit facility, that also makes a big difference, my personal opinion is you go further with a nonprofit facility, they are the ones who really care about our elderly...but again that is my opinion.. you are never to old to learn, keep your eyes open when you are there, ask many questions the only wrong question is the one you don't ask. I hope this helped you even a little.

Under the circumstances, yes, your mother should be in a nursing home, but you should now look into finding one that is less expensive but still has an excellent reputation for taking care of its residents. You could look into the possibility of getting a reverse mortgage on the house, to provide the money to pay for the nursing home. Seek some free legal aid for your situation. Above all, you need an honest financial advisor.
