x is the independent, (what you control) time in weeks or days. y is the dependent variable(what you have no control over)

The y-axis gets the data that represents the independent variable - whatever you measure, count, or record.

time on the x-axis (bottom) and weight on the y-axis (left side)

the bottom should be a variable that is fixed (unchangeable...time), whereas the y-axis variable can be fluctuable, such as the mouse's weight.

Not sure how to give a good "explanation", but it lends itself nicely to a line graph.
