I'd say Deep Purple's Smoke On the Water's intro.
I know alot of people who don't listen to rock who know the intro... but not the rest of the rest of the song.

So what do you think is the most famous guitar riff?

Not Googling or looking anything up, I promise: 1. Led Zeppelin - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, John Bonham. 2. A lyric in Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild": "heavy metal thunder." 3. Don't know 4. The Beatles, The Dave Clark 5, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks 5. Black Sabbath 6. London 7. The Beatles and ? 8. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 9. Pete Townshend of The Who 10. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles 11. Disc jockey and promoter Alan Freed.

Yep, "Smoke On The Water" is pretty famous. I knew the riff before I knew the song or even Deep Purple.

Others include the riffs in these songs:

"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath

"Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin

"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones

"Day Tripper" by the Beatles

"Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

But I knew the riff from "Smoke On The Water" before I knew who any of these bands were.

Every time I go into Guitar Center, there's, even still, posers picking out: "Stairway to Heaven", "Hotel California", "Smoke on the Water", and even "Sanitarium" or "One" (of course by Metallica)....any one of the above mentioned have to definitely be considered!
