Yes, unless you have an employment contract or if you are in a union. Otherwise California is an at will state and an employer can fire you at their will. If you do not comply with their request to learn Spanish and you are fired they wouldn't be violating any laws.

If it was stated that way before they hired you, then YES. They can require language skills in their hiring. They can require spanish the same as they can require english.

If its after the fact, then YES but they have to pay for you to learn it. They can send you to classes to learn new skills for your job but they have to cover the costs. They can require that you learn to drive a forklift, become certified on windows, or learn a language.

interesting side note: the California Constitution was written in both English and Spanish
