Pipe smoke, ben gay, and vanilla candles. Those three were a constant scent in my grandparents apartment. They both passed when I was very young, and every time I smell any one of those items they come to my mind.
I think it is so wonderful how our minds can connect a scent to a memory. Photographs can only give an idea of what something looked like, but a scent puts you back in that time. You can close your eyes and its like you're there.

Strangely enough, the smell of a furnace when it is first turned on for the cool weather. It seemed to always be a peaceful time growing up in our home with the Holidays coming and all.

Back when my mother and father were together , my father used to take the newspaper in the bathroom with him on Sunday mornings. The smell of the newspaper reminds of that.

Cigar smoke and roses, together or separately. They both make me think of my 'Grandpa' ... he wasn't my biological grandfather, but was my mother's step-father ... but he was THE MAIN MAN when I was growing up, and he taught me the most AMAZING things, like how to 'dream up my own stories' and how to 'talk to the wild animals' in the woods ... and also how to be 'green' (ecological) LONG before the world knew that word, ecology. My Grandpa is dead now, but my sons will be just like him, because that is what I taught them, too.

It's hard to find in public restrooms. I only get a whiff of it about once every five years or so.

Wow, what a bunch of great answers so far.
For me I guess it's dog. Most of my good memories have something to do with a dog I've cared about.
