It has three different meanings to me. Freedom. Beauty. And I once heard that when somebody you love passes away they will send you things to remind you of them and one of those things is butterflies. My papaw passed away over a year ago and I believe that because I see butterflies all the time now and they're always landing on me. Even if it's not true it's just something nice to think of. My papaw was my best friend so having that thought that he's sending me these beautiful butterflies as a sign means the world to me.

This is the quintessential philosopher's question! An entire book could be & many have been written attempting to answer this question, lol. I think this is a question at some point all must answer & no one can answer it for you. It simply is one that each must come to answer & then "own" that answer. I will put out there some ponderings just to muddy the waters a bit, LOL! If I have a dream at night, did that dream exist really? If existence is defined by what is perceived in some fashion, like seeing, hearing, feeling, etc; then do hallucinations have existence? If not, then existence clearly can not be defined by merely what we do or do not perceive with our senses & we are back to what is the criteria for existence? I think this question is dangerously close to a few others, such as who are we, what are we, how did we get here, etc. I don't think any of these including your Q can be answered alone or separately. Great Q! Many Blessings!

For me it means 'beauty that doesn't last long, yet it's to be treasured'... ^_^

It's because butterflies are such beautiful creatures, yet fragile, they don't live long... They die after 2 to 3 weeks of becoming a butterfly...
