I think the problem is in the tank. It contain I think a water saving devise but it does not have a chain but is all plastic. Attached to the handle is a plastic rod that goes into the link attacked to the central piece which covers the stopper. It is a one piece plastic bell shape and when the handle is flushed, it through the link the rod is through raises the bell shaped thing and thus exposes the hole where the water drains into the toilet to flush it. It also contain the ballcock float that is plastic and it has a plastic screw thingie which I think adjusts the height of the ballcock but this is OK as the water level is high.

The problem is that it only flushes right every 2 or 3 times with the contents going down OK..the rest of the time, the water in the tank only empties about halfway (cause the bell shaped piece goes down too quickly) and then starts filling up. this is not enough water to flush it apparently. If I hold the handle down for some time, it flushes OK,

but how can I fix it so it does not have to be held down so long in order to flush right..it worked ok before...

I tried using the drain cleaner ($10 expensive) that home depot said would fix it but it didn't do a darn thing,..

I see nothing in the plastic working in the tank that can be adjusted except the only other thing I see might be the plastic screw thing at the end of the pole holding the ballcock but I think that just adjusts the water level which is very high already.

How can I fix this? Someone suggested some float you attached to the stopper but since the stopper is not the rubber seal thing but attached to this bell where would you put it and where do you buy them. what would help fix this..thanks

The flapper {bell shape thing} is not coming up high enough all of the time. Shorten the length of the chain or plastic strap so that it lifts it past a pivot point. The pivot point should be a little past straight up. This should take care of the problem.

I would say check for an adjustment to have more water fill into the tank. The only reason the flapper stays up when flushing is because the pressure from the running water keeps the flapper up until the water is all drained. The reason this flapper is not flushing long enough is because there is probably not enough water in the tank to keep the flapper up. Check that part first then if not there is something wrong with the plastic part that lifts the flapper. Check that for an adjustment so it will pull the flapper up farther with one push of the handle.

First of all NO drain chemical on the planet will FIX any FLUSH mechanism.

With all due respect; as much of an issue as this seems to be; why not spend $10 to $15 and replace the entire thing. You've probably spent that much in water and effort already anyway.

Toilet parts replacement issues are some of the easiest DIY tasks; one can get involved in. On a personal note I like the old fashioned FLAPPER type fixture, with the appropriate fill mechanism.

had basically the same problem myself, you adjust the float-
ball and it will work okay for a while,i don't agree with the
other answers.the best way i found to fix the problem is to
get rid of that floatball stuff and go to the hardware store
and get one of those things [cant remember the name]
that has a float cup,the cup fills up with water and goes
up&down the only thing you have to worry about is adjusting
the shaft up&down for the right water level in your tank.
once adjusted it should last for a long time.cost of the
replacement part 7 to 10 dollars.i have had them in my
flushes for 5plus/yrs no problems.

get a good quality closet auger (ridgid, general) and use it to unstop toilet, IF thats where your problem acually is. When you use plunger on it, does it make noise in tub or shower drain? If so then your drain is clogged up in which you will need a snake which you can rent at home depot or tool rental place. Make sure you get one with 5/8 or 3/4 inch cable. 1/2" cable is good on kitchen drain but not on toilet line.

The answer is in the toilet itself. Don't waste any more money on drain cleaner. I agree with the above answer. Try that - it should work. Good luck - that can be so frustrating!
