The NICE thing about being an Empty-Nesting Single Retiree .. is the FACT that there are NO CHILDREN in my home (they are adults and living on their own), I don't have to face the holiday stress of multiple teenagers tramping in and out of my home, uninvited 'guests', etc etc etc ...
ALL this Empty-Nesting Single Retiree has to do NOW is relax and think of a good way to remember her NEW Boyfriend during the holidays .. because ... now ... I can FINALLY DATE too!

I honestly don't get all that stressed for the holidays. I love shopping and I love buying things for people I love, so Christmas shopping is very fun and not a chore at all. I also love cooking. My husband and I are in college, we go to his parents' house every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. His mom and grandma also both love to cook, so we all divide the cooking between us and it's a very fun 'girl time.' I was stressed out for the very first Christmas and Thanksgiving away from my own parents (they live just way too far away) so my mom and my husband's mom decided to surprise me, my mom sent his mom some of my favorite holiday recipes so I could have some familiar food and my mom's special cookies and stuff. Sweet of them! My husband is also extremely supportive and loving, it is nearly impossible to be stressed out around him. He is a master massager, a master lover, an awesome listener, and always does whatever he can to make me feel as good as I can. If you are stressed, then take some time to do stuff for you. Run a bubble bath, kick the kids out of the house to build a snowman, trade massages with your husband, go for a drive at night to look at all the neighborhood Christmas light decorations, etc. It's not a big deal, the holidays are here for us to celebrate and be happy, not to freak us out.

Hello you!
I am not a christian, so I find it irritating to see the ads ad nausea on tv for stuff that the kiddies cannot live without.
We buy a bunch of non-sense toys from our local China Town for the kiddies, surpasses anything at the Wal Mart Sh t Pile has for kiddies and, they love it.
Keep it all in perspective, know what is ahead, compromise, be civil, do not discuss important/personal stuff. Do NOT bring any family squabbles up now, leave if this happens, (how stupid), talk later. Have FUN. Go for a snow walk when all of the lights are shining, breath and enjoy!
This is a time to be merry, eat and be generous (try it without the Wal Mart Sh t Pile!) try to be creative - what do they dress like, what do they read, then buy your gifts based on their interests.
Oh my gosh, going to do that next weekend (Can. our T.Giving is on Sunday).
Thanks for asking.

since i have nothing to celebrate, the holidays just pass me by. yeah, i save a lot of money.
but in general, to reduce stress, you should categorise your gift recipients.
close friends and immediate family - require more thought (or less since you know their preferences and can more or less zoom in on the correct section of the dept store)
boss and other politically correct gifts (in laws, for example) - stick to safe gifts unless you know they are asking for some specific item
the rest - generic stuff that can swap. just buy a certain number for adults that you expect to do gift swapping with, and the associated number of kids/teens.
and to save money, if you can buy something out of season and on sale, all the better. avoids the shopping crowds too. this is especially effective for stocking up generic gifts for the rest of your gift recipients. towels, photo frames, t-shirts, kids' toys,... (except items with expiry dates like chocs)
