Why is health care so expensive? What can be done to fix it?

Question

I don't know if a national health system or gov't subsidized insurance is the answer, but health care costs are insane! I need health insurance, and it is going to cost me almost $200 a month!!! There are cheaper ones, but the co-pays are so high, I may as well not buy those. I'm 25 and a non-smoker, it should not cost that much. Why does it cost $10000 to fix a broken arm? Ridiculous.

I'm with you 100 percent. Insurance rates and the cost of pharmaceutical drugs is phenomenal. I don't know the answer of how to fix it, but yours is a great question that should be posed to the legislators and politicians. Hopefully, things will change under a new administration, whether it is democrat or republican, but I'm not holding my breath. Did you know that it costs less than a dollar to manufacture a pill, and yet the pharmacy industry charges hundreds? It is more than ridiculous, it's a travesty. Some people have to choose between medicine and food, and it shouldn't be that way.

because hospitals are medical groups are in it FOR THE MONEY. it doesnt need to be that expensive but it is. UNIVERSAL health care is the answer. you should watch the movie SICKO. its amazing

i get health care through my job but i still pay about 105 a month for full coverage. they have a cheaper insurance for like 50 a month but that is high deductible so i opted for the higher premium, and no deductibles

Hey Red, You can get the same health care with my company at $29.95 for health and $19.95 for dental or both for $40.00.
I had to make the same decision for my family and myself and I only pay $40.00 for my household. I kept my specialist/pulmonary and went from paying $45 co-pay w/sierra health of Nevada to paying $30 for my visit. My wife picked up her prescription three days ago and she went from $30 to $5.61. Oh it gets better, my son and daughter went to the same doctor when they were babies and as toddlers my sons visits are $30 and my daughter which we had to establish we Payed $107 w/analysis but her next visit will be $30. You have to establish yourself with a provider and you will never think of insurances again. This way you have control of what you want to do!! Think about the equipment and the medicine that you are going to pay in healthcare.

1) Medical equipment is not cheap to manufacture, operate and maintain. Most modern medical needs to be precise, hence the engineering side needs lots of time and funds to develop and manufacture it. So, the machine is not cheap.

2) Medication. Normally, on average, it takes 10 years for a new drug to get approval from the FDA. 10 years of R&D from scientist, lab work, to toxicity test, lab animal test, clinical trial. Imagine the amount of time and $$ spend on a new drug. And imagine out of 1000 new drugs, only one is going to get approved.

Add the the costs and time, and you can come to a conclusion why health care is so expensive.
