Yes in certain cases it is justified.......
I think its justified because some books are written to spread ill-will and mislead the people. Such books should not be allowed to reach the massess.
What is your question?

Books on Erotica were banned on moralistic grounds and in some cases collections of Erotica from libraries were burned. It was not considered literature or important to history though it did give an idea about what people were like. A wag stement that could be made in an ostensibly undemocratic regime is this ''If you want to make sure everyone reads a book ban it''. They are sure to have copies of it hidden at home. Then pretend to search for it and that you are being opressive and make satirical speeches about how you have decided to ban it the book and that you are very opprresive all the while winking at the world.

Banning books was thought up by those people who can't tell the difference between fiction and reality, (and those who don't want their child's school library having something totally inappropriate in it, like those really gooey romances.) I applaud the parents not wanting kids getting their hands on that, but the others . . . . Like the church groups wanting to ban the Harry Potter books . . . I cannot believe that there are people who actually protest books like that, it is silly, and if they actually won and got some books banned, where would it end? All that would be left in the library would be those little Dick & Jane books and the dictonary. I mean come on, if you don't think your kid can tell the difference between reality and fiction, you had better turn the television off and have a long conversaton with them.

First of all - understand this. In America there has NEVER been a book banned. There have been various communities that have banded together to censure certain books and prevent them from being taught in the schools or circulated in the local library. But NEVER has a book been banned that it was not available for purchase. Nor is it likely there will ever be.
I oppose censorship. I oppose banning books. However there is another side to the coin. For many years now, DVD's, CD's and video games have carried ratings. And it has not hurt their sales a single iota.
Far too many parents see their children reading and they smile happily and say "At least they are reading" without knowing jack about the content of those books. As an author who is known for violent and erotic scenes, I would seriously support rating of books. There are things I write in my books I would not want children to read. I think they lack the maturity and understanding to deal with the subject matter. I have heard of numerous deaths of teens due to auto erotic asphyxia. I personally know of a case where a young man bled to death duplicating a sex act he read in a very irresponsible online story. I find those things appalling.
I personally would like to see that great big R on the cover of the book my teenage son was reading. I would like to know if some kind of parent/child dialogue was in order.
Nobody has ever banned a book in this country nor will they. However, I believe the time has come for books to display ratings the same as other materials. Kids hear banned books and they get all up in arms. Part of me wonders why they aren't as concerned with the war in Iraq, but that is another story.
It simply awes me that a kid cannot walk out a video store with a copy of Manhunt 2 (Rated Adults Only) or walk out of 7-11 with a pack of cigarettes and yet they can easily walk out of Barnes and Noble with The Story of O or 120 Days of Sodom or Justine, Philosophy of the Bedroom and Other Writings. There is just something wrong with that. Pax - C

NO!!!
Books shouldn't be banned!!! It's just not right!
I recently read Fahrenheit 451 for school and they were a community that BANNED BOOKS. It was horrible!
Imagine never reading again? The words you once craved are gone forever and just a distant memory. You'll never be able to pick up your favorite hardback copy and just lay back and relax. No more pleasure in reading about your favorite characters and reliving a different world. No more sweet escape from reality...
I sound like a total bookworm and nerd right now, but that's just how it is!!!
Also, I completely didn't understand your question but said what I think anyway. :)

Those two words should never be in the same scentence! I read about a book a day, and I don't know what I would do without em. Banning books is totally illegal in the united states, unless it is in a school or something where the content is considered innapropriate. But if you want to read a book, order it or check out your public library.

What exactly is the question. We can see the topic for the question, but we need more info so we can understand what the question is. For example, had you said "How do you feel about banning books?" without any additional information, we'dthen know what you were asking.

I agree with almost everyone else who's posted. Books should only banned from public places if they're explicit, for obvious reasons. Other than that, if a person sees something misleading or something that's meant to stir up controversy, they should be smart enough to check the sources that are cited (and, for that matter, make sure that their are sources for the author/authoress' information).

No, no, no, no, no. It doesn't matter how misleading things are. People have the right to express themselves. Something that is not true to some people may be true to others.
