Well since you asked this in Geology, I will give you a geologic answer, esp. since I do my work in the Appalachians.

- They are an extremely old mountain chain.
- They stretch from Maine to East Alabama.
- They have enabled geologists like me to to better understand Laurentian and Gondwannan interaction.
-They give geologists a great example of foreland fold thrust belts.
- They have places with excellent examples of all grades of metamorphism.
- They give us age relationships that help geologists put better age constraints on continental rifting.
