I'm vacationing in Kissimmee, Florida for a few weeks and I noticed there are these small 1-2 inch lizards that are running around. What are they? I also heard Black Widow spiders are common in the United States, how common are they, how can you avoid them and are there signs to tell if they are in the area (particular spider web etc)?

Above is a link to Florida Reptiles which include lizards. I wish it was in color so you could see all of our beatiful lizards.

One I grew up calling a chamelion are really the anole. This is the one you see changing color to blend in with the background. Also with this list of Florida lizards you, will see many have been introduced. These are lizards that have been released as unwanted pets or possibly escaped.

Also one of the anoles puffs it's throat to a brilliant red and looks as if it's doing push-ups.

Enjoy Florida while you're here.

Additional thoughts: I should have looked a little farther before I posted my answer. Below is another site that shows the anoles in full color.

I lived in the St.Cloud/Kissimmee area & those lizards were EVERYWHERE! I believe that they are chamelions.
I don't know much about the Black Widow spiders, though.
