My wife and I are going through a rough time. She insists that we not file taxes together this year. I make a lot more money than she does and she is under the impression that she will receive more money back if she files alone as opposed to joint filing with myself. We have no kids.

(I know it's waaaay past tax season, but it's been a rough year)

You get a better tax break if you file jointly. But it just could be that she will do better filing separately. Seems like she knows what she is talking about. She may have paid more in relative to her salary than you.

When I was married, I got more money back filing together. When I got divorced, I received less.

Work it up both ways and see how it looks. Then you can make an intelligent decision.
