I'm a floor covering contractor and I get people trying to talk me down on the price i quoted them all the time. Why would you do that. If you go to the store and a gallon of milk says $2.99 your not going to try to hustle the cashier for a better price? I don't see why its ok to do it to me?

Well thats how people r. There are tons of people who think that people like u (contractors along with plumbers, and carpenters) get paid a lot of money, and doing the same work for a little less wont kill u.
They will threaten to find someone else, they will B*tch and complain about the price, and will claim to have seen someone else do it for cheaper then u, but in reality they need the service and u need the money, so this makes an awkward situation. But always remember there is always more clients out there 4 u.

It's all part of the barter system. You are the captain of your own ship and have the ability to change your price-take less profit. I work on the it can't hurt to ask and many peope will lower their prices. If I have a large order, I expect a better price or I will take my business some where else. It's just all part of the game.

It amazes me but the price is always negotiable. I have even withnessed it at the retail level. I would never do it. For me. The price is what it is. I am not one to go to Mexico and barter. I find that whole scene ugly. It is what it is. Buy it for that or move on.

The cashier couln't change the price if he/she wanted to, so there would be no use. You are self emloyed and make the final decisions, so people believe you are in a position to negotiate.

A $2.99 gallon of milk isn't worth haggling over.

A large amount though, like for a car or some contracting work, is worth it.

I used to artwork interior the Finance workplace at ordinary autos. i know that sellers are charged in uncomplicated terms a million/2 of the stated retail fee on all autos. So 50% of the decal fee is income. They used to offer a deal to workers of 10% over fee. i do no longer think of they are fairly so beneficiant anymore. do you know somebody who works for Mitsubishi that would desire to get you an worker fee? an excellent form of workers of vehicle companies try this to earn greater advantageous greenbacks. (hence the no longer so great bargains on worker bought autos.)

Because floors are a lot more money than a gallon of milk!

sounds like they feel as if it's not a "set price", even though it is... maybe you should try and be more clear that it isn't negotiable
